By Domino Club
The Rossmoor Domino Club had another active week of play, with strong scores in both regular Five-Up games and Saturday’s Mexican Train session.
For the regular game on Thursday, Sept. 17, Mary Tobin claimed first place with 344 points. Karin Romak finished second with 330 points, followed by Donna Schmelzer with 315.
Gary Stern led the field on the following Saturday, scoring 333 points. Al Davis was close behind with 325, followed by Jerry Foott with 316, Elaine Eisenstadt with 308 and Larry Fredricks with 307.
In that Saturday afternoon’s Mexican Train game, Elvia Dunn earned the winning low
score of 274, followed by Barbara Zodikoff with 344. The club congratulates all this week’s players, and thanks everyone who joined in the games.
New players are always welcome at the Rossmoor Domino Club on Thursdays. Whether someone is an experienced player or new to the game, club members are happy to explain the rules, share strategies, and help them get comfortable with regular play.
The club plays Five-Up, a lively domino game in which doubles serve as spinners and can create additional scoring opportunities. Players form partnerships at the table, so there is no need to arrive with a partner. Regular games are held Thursdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m. in the Oak Room, and Mexican Train is played Satur
days at 1 p.m. in the Oak Room.

Kent Croswell Plan ahead: Part of planning ahead is anticipating how your side can score after the opponent on your right scores. To that end, tiles containing a blank or a five are considered “power” tiles. Try to hold these tiles in reserve rather than playing them early. If the corresponding double is on the board and the opponent scores, you may be able to play a power tile on that double’s open end – either matching the score or increasing it by five points.
Example: 2-2 (no score), 2-6 (score 10), 2-1 (no score), 1-4 (score 10), 2-0 (score 10), 2-5 (score 15).

Join the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) for Mahjong Night, an evening of laughter, good company and a little friendly competition. This event is being generously hosted by Sherry Rowen and Cindy Gershen on Monday, Oct. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Oak Room at Gateway.
The cost for this exciting evening is $36, and the proceeds from this event will be used by the local NCJW charities that support women and
children in need. This evening, the proceeds will be donated to East Bay Health, a nonprofit membership clinic that provides compassionate, whole person primary care to patients of all socioeconomic status. The medical support to families includes education about healthy eating, and encourages children to eat healthy meals with their own cooking classes taught by Cindy Gershen.
Delicious light bites will be served all night, so come pull up a chair and join the fun. Participants can also expect
some fun prizes.
Mahjong is the perfect way to relax, connect with friends, and meet new people. Enjoy an evening filled with strategy and laughter. Residents can arrange for their own table of four, or come on their own and make new friends. Don’t forget to bring your own Mahjong set. The tables will be ready and good vibes waiting.
Come for the game and stay for the company.
To reserve a spot, send $36 (check payable to NCJW) with
