The Rossmoor Emergency Preparedness Organization (EPO) is hosting a “Coffee with a Lotta Cops” meeting with Tom Cashion, Rossmoor’s director of public safety, and guests from the Walnut Creek Police Department on Monday, Oct. 5 starting at 10 a.m. in the Fireside Room at Gateway.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, which is the reason “Coffee with a Lotta Cops” is happening this month. Check the table in the lobby of the Fireside Room that day for copies of the Rossmoor Residents’ Guide to Pe-

destrian and Driver Safety.

In keeping with the meeting’s theme, there will be free coffee (regular and decaf coffee, hot water and assorted tea bags) and assorted donuts. The Fireside Room will be set up with 15 round tables where residents can sit in comfort and talk to various representatives of the WCPD, Cashion or someone from the EPO leadership team at those tables that don’t have someone from the police department.

Lt. Mike Watson, who became Sector One commander this January, will introduce himself and other WCPD presenters. Sector One includes all of

Rossmoor along with a sizeable portion of southern Walnut Creek. Watson will be accompanied by more than dozen other police department members from a range of departments and assignments.

In addition to the round tables where Rossmoor residents can talk to individual officers, there will be a podium set up in the front of the room, and several rows of seats behind the round tables.

At the podium with Cashion and Watson will be Crime Prevention specialist Kira Raman, and Traffic and Outreach supervisor Sgt. Gary Silva.

There will be two representatives from the city of Walnut Creek’s Traffic Engineering team, engineers Matt Redmond and Briana Byrne.

Before the individual presentations, each of the people at the podium will explain what their job entails. Raman will provide a brief status report of what has changed over recent years in Rossmoor and Walnut Creek, and discuss crime-prevention tips and highlight the Neighborhood Watch program. Silva will give a presentation on pedestrian safety. Redmond and Byrne will discuss how the city of Walnut Creek deals with traffic safety.

Oct. 18-25 is national United Against Hate Week. On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18, Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) will sponsor a “United Against Hate Walk” in Rossmoor. Everyone is invited to participate in this unified effort to live in mutual respect and reject hatred or othering of people who may be different from one’s own identity groups.

To participate, gather in Peacock Plaza between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. Just Ukes will provide some music as people gather. At 1:30, RAD

Co-Presidents Cruz Lizarraga and Joe Easley will welcome everyone, after which there will be a brief inspiring presentation on the themes of “Love, Not Hate,” a final song to sing with Just Ukes, and then the walk will start counterclockwise on the streets around Creekside Golf Course.

Numerous other Rossmoor clubs are co-sponsoring the walk, including African Americans and Friends, the Diversity Consciousness Committee of the Interfaith Council of Rossmoor, and the LGBTQ+ Alliance. Other clubs that want to join as a co-sponsor should contact Joe Easley (easyjoe1947@gmail.com).

The Rossmoor Activities Council, recognized under the Rossmoor Walnut Creek (RWC) policies, connects almost 200 resident-run clubs and organizations in Rossmoor Walnut Creek. It is holding its next General Meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. in the Fireside Room. Club presidents, club treasurers, designated officers and others are welcome to attend.

The Oct. 8 meeting will focus on how clubs and organizations handle treasurer duties. The Council will feature

a panel of treasurers from clubs to discuss their background, responsibilities, challenges, and specific approaches as club treasurers. After the panel presentation, the audience can ask questions, exchange experiences, and learn best practices.

Clubs are asked to let their club’s treasurer know about the meeting so they can attend. All club officers and others are welcome.

Please arrive a few minutes early to fill out name tags and socialize with other attendees.

Residents have asked how they can submit feedback and comments to the owner and manager of The Golden Pear restaurant, especially considering the News does not ac-

cept letters to the editor reviewing businesses or advertisers.
